MUSCLE SHOALS – With five first half touchdowns against rival Athens, Muscle Shoals put the Class 6A, Region 7 championship on ice quick.
Muscle Shoals improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in region play heading into a non-region regular season finale at Wetumpka next week.
Muscle Shoals’ region championship was the fifth for the Trojans under head coach Scott Basden, who took over the program in 2008.
The win over Athens was sparked by former Golden Eagles quarterback Logan Smothers, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half as the Trojans opened up a commanding 35-14 lead at the half.
Smother’s touchdown passes went to Nick Griffith and Ty Smith.
Smothers also ran for a touchdown in the opening half.
Brooks Berry added a touchdown run of his own, while Javar Strong picked up an Athens punt that was blocked by Caleb McDougle and returned it for another score.
Keevon Hankins broke loose on a 68-yard touchdown run to cap the Trojans’ scoring.
Smothers’ third touchdown pass of the night went to Ty Smith.
Smothers was 20 of 26 passing for 236 yards.
Athens added a touchdown with six minutes left in the game to trim the final margin to 49-21.
