BIRMINGHAM – Baldwin Carr and Emiliano Calvillo earned qualifying spots in the 2019 Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state championships with top eight finishes at the Class 6A North Super Section tournament at Bill Harris Arena Saturday.
Carr, wrestling at 138 pounds, went 2-2 in the section tournament and finished seventh overall. He recorded a 2-1 decision in the seventh place match after opening with a bye, two losses and a pin.
Calvillo, a 195-pounder for the Trojans, went 2-3 in the tournament with a pair of pins. He finished eighth overall.
Canon Mellott (220) went 1-2 with a pin but did not place in the top eight. Also coming up short in bids for state tournament spots were Hunter Estis (113), Dylan Fuller (152) and Hunter Harper (285).
The AHSAA state wrestling championships open Wednesday at Propst Arena in the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Wrestling in Class 6A opens Thursday.
