Multiple Teams · Rios field goal sends Trojans to second round

MUSCLE SHOALS – Andres Rios missed badly on a first quarter extra point Friday night in Muscle Shoals’ first round playoff matchup with Gardendale.

He was perfect when it counted the most, however, nailing a 25-yard field goal with one second remaining to send the Trojans to a 23-20 victory over the Rockets in a Class 6A state playoff opener.

Muscle Shoals will travel to Oxford for a second round playoff game next week.

The Trojans took a 12-7 lead at the half with a pair of Terrell McDonald touchdown runs. The junior quarterback scored on runs on 1 and 16 yards, but the Trojans failed on both extra point attempts.

Gardendale took a 20-12 lead in the second half but McDonald ran 11 yards for his third touchdown of the night and Carlos Davis added the 2-point conversion run to knot the game at 20.

Muscle Shoals drove for the winning field goal with big plays from Luke Hornsby, Tanner Wade and Davis.

The Trojans improved to 9-2 overall with the win. Muscle Shoals has beaten Gardendale in three of four meetings the last two seasons.
