Among the freshman South’s highlights were placing second in the decathlon and setting personal records in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and long jump (21 feet, 1.75 inches).

He took third place in the pole vault (15 feet, 3 inches) and eighth in 110-meter hurdles (15.15 seconds), earning points in both events, and also competed in the javelin finals.

Southeast Missouri’s men totaled 182 points, far ahead of runner-up Belmont (138) and third-place Eastern Illinois (136).

In the indoor season this past February, South also won the OVC Championship heptathlon. He also competed in the hurdles and pole vault during that OVC Championship meet.

South was the TimesDaily’s 2016 Boys Track Athlete of the Year.
